CANNA

Full or partial sun. A large-leaved herbaceous perennial with leaves and habits resembling its close relatives, banana and ginger. Big, warm-colored flowers resemble iris, attracting hummingbirds and bees. Many cultivated varieties are available. The name “canna” originates from the Latin term for “reed.” Like reeds, canna grows in fairly wet settings.Canna is big and spreading; frequent grooming and removal of spent leaves keep it looking fresh. It freezes down to the rhizomes during freezing weather; plan on cutting it back in winter. Canna leaf rollers are caterpillars of the Brazilian skipper butterfly, often eating through the leaves during summer. Some canna species (especially Canna indica) may be invasive along streams and rivers, harming native plant communities and wildlife.
