BLUEBONNET

Full sun; a cool-season annual climaxing with spikes of blue flowers along Texas roadsides in mid to late spring. Also available in maroon, white, rosy-pink and light blue forms. Plant by seed on bare ground in mid-autumn; it can grow as a low groundcover over Bermuda grass during winter. An A&M Texas Superstar and, obviously, a native. There are three primary species in Texas: Lupinus texensis (Texas Bluebonnet), Lupinus havardii (Big Bend Bluebonnet) and, south of San Antonio, Lupinus subcarnosus (Sandyland Bluebonnet).
